Argh! I wish people would stop using "Christian" the same way they use "American". There are as many kinds of Christians as there are Americans (or at least they're both big numbers), and Jimmy Swaggart isn't the spokesman for ANY of MY Christian friends.

Yeah, squeaky wheels get the news media's attention. It's a shame that by being non-offensive, accepting, kind, and generally good citizens, the majority of Christians go unnoticed.

Is Swaggart still around? I thought he was still off in a corner blubbering and begging forgiveness for stealing money from his congregation.

Swaggart is a stain--an ugly stain--on the face of Christianity. He has no place in any pulpit, in any position of leadership in any organization that calls itself Christian.

We are all sinners fallen short of God's grace in one way or another. By definition as Christians really--when we accept Christ's sacrifice for us, we acknowledge that we can't meet God's high standards ourselves. And "there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

But Christian LEADERS need to be held to a somewhat higher standard. We're supposed to be able to look to them for guidance and example. He needs to go away and stay away, and Jim Baker with him.

first of all, the biblical term (at least from the old testiment) that is often translated into the English word 'prostitute' is more accurately translated 'priestess'. seems women who worked at temples of the local Goddess often accepted tributes to the cult from men who would sleep with them as they took on the role of the Goddess. an easy mistake but it serves to denegrate both Goddess worship and the women who were its leaders. prostitution as a holy act? s'cool with me :-)

secondly, many people have suspected that Jesus was married to Mary Magdoline. at the very least he came to her rescue and held her in a position of high esteem. and I doubt this was based on her having 'converted' from her profession

thanks for pointing out both the hypocracy of Swaggert and his ilk and the obvious fact that gay men tend to have taste. while I would take a daddy with a few extra pounds over some gym nazi anyday, Swaggert is just too plain ugly to fuck unless he was paying you. and I bet he would be cheap and a lousy tipper to boot.

The prostitute in question (circa 1987) posed for Penthouse (If I remember correctly). Apparently he did not use much money with her, she was pretty cheap and ugly. He did use her often and she did mention he kept asking about bringing her daughter to the sessions. Maybe he thought a good laying of the hands and wood would keep the young teen out of trouble. What a perv and hypocrite.

Passion without understanding is meaningless. I believe that for most of the men and women who consider themselves Christians, the ideals set by Christ are lost on them. At one time, Christianity was a belief system of acceptance, love, understanding, compassion and unification. Modern Christianity, especially the particular flavor promoted by evangelists, is ALL about separation and economics, but the God I believe in isn't short of cash or compassion.

As a quasi-straight guy, getting hit on by gay guys has never bothered me. The fact that I tend to go to gay bars for the better music obviously suggests I can deal with it I guess. And hell, if someone is buying my drinks, I don't care what their orientation is.

People with Swaggart's public history are problematic for me. I hate the way that he is lumped in with me, because as a Christian I don't fear and hate gay men or women. I *do* believe that the Bible teaches homosexuality to be a sin, but not one any more evil than adultery, lying, coveting or several others I've been guilty of. I certainly understand that "thou shalt not kill" means exactly that. But I also recognize that part of my desire that he be separate from me stems from a tendency toward self-righteousness that I have to battle with also. He is a sinner saved by grace only, as am I. I can only avoid the dark by clinging more tightly to the Light and I am not inherently any better than those I'm tempted to condemn.

Jimmy is just preacher doing his job. God bless him. If you can't take this kind of joke then go listen to a different preacher. Ther're alot of them out there.
